Background

Avant Garde was licensed by ITC to a number of manufacturers of dry transfer lettering, including Chartpak, Letraset, Mecanorma, and Zipatone.

From Fonts in Use:

Issued by ITC in 1970, as their first typeface release (together with ITC Souvenir). Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase based their typeface on Lubalin’s logo for Avant Garde magazine. Shown in 5 weights in Photo-Lettering’s 1971 catalog.

ITC Avant Garde Gothic Condensed was drawn by Ed Benguiat in 1974. Obliques were added by André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977. ... ITC Lubalin Graph is a related slab serif.
